Ethan Jakob Spindle
This spindle came about as my grandson, the son of Monique and Cory, had noticed the Damsel Monique and that it was named for his Mother. Ethan has been making beds, cleaning any mess he finds, and generally being quite a marvelous little boy. He secretly confided to his mother that he is trying to get on my good side so I will name a spindle after him. How can I refuse this entreaty? Logically it occurred to me that a very small version of the Damsel Monique would create a spindle we do not have, a spindle which is truly tiny and light. Ethans spindle is identical to the Damsel Monique except it is designed with a two inch whorl, 6 inch shaft and weighs .2 to .4. It is a mere butterfly wing, balanced, fast and light as can be. They are pretty and petite and I have been having such fun making them in all manner of combinations. As a natural extension of the Damsel Monique, naming it Ethans Spindle ties the bow on this present to my very special Grandson Ethan Jakob Butcher.

Damsel Monique Spindle
The Damsel Monique came about for two reasons. Foremost, I had been pondering a small question with our light fine spindles. They fill up so fast! I love taking a small baggie of fine fiber and a Lady Barbara, McKenna Lee, or Loki where I have a few minutes to spend spindling. However too soon they are filled to the brim and out of room! I wanted to come up with a spindle that would combine lightness, speed, and balance, ensuring lots of cop room and hours of spinning time. After much thought I have engineered a spindle will a large whorl, from 2 3/4 to 3 inches, a shaft length of 7 inches and weights from .4 to .9 depending on the wood chosen. Theses spindles spin for a long, long time, look delicate but are durable, fast, light and perfectly balanced. You can enjoy spinning for a long time before the cop fills up on this spindle. I have offered the Damsel Monique in Masur Birch, or Redwood Burl laminated in a choice of Purpleheart, Bloodwood, Paduk, Honduras Redheart, Honduras Pinkheart (this is the sapwood of Honduras Redheart and is a light girly pink) also in combinations of Bolivian Rosewood/Spalted Maple, Spalted Maple/Purpleheart, Canarywood/Paduk, and Pomelle Bubinga/Pinkheart. Other combinations will come available as we experiment with weights and how the woods react to this design. As to the second reason we have a new spindle, my eldest daughter Monique, came to me with this remark, What do I (place expletive here) have to do to get a spindle named after me!! It is true that I have a spindle named after my Mother, the Lady Barbara, my second daughter, McKenna Lee, Barts sister Kelly, even our favorite dog, the Mastiff! Not to mention the many non-related and related historic figures that have been kind enough to lend their names to spindles in the Greensleeves line. Thinking fast and deciding that now would be an advantageous time to create and name our new spindle the Damsel Monique. A spindle that is pretty, fair, and a highly functioning dainty girl just like its namesake. |
